Triplets of Belleville

2003, directed by Sylvain Chomet

I'm not a huge fan of animation. Actually, I'm not a huge fan of Saturday morning cartoons and Disney, but other kinds of animation I've quite enjoyed. But I forget that there are many kinds of animation that I do like, and I resisted the Triplets. Foolish me.

This weird and fantastic French animated film is full of great images and music and characters and story. The general premise is that a young boy falls in love with bicycling, his grandmother helps him become a professional cyclist, and then things go terribly awry. You'll have to watch it to find out how "awry."

The music is particularly fun and weird, the dog adorable, and the pacing enjoyably slow. Odd and scary things happy, there are some impressive send-ups of France and the US, and we fall in love with Grandma. Enjoy!
