directed by Sofia Coppola, 2003
Much has already been written about
this movie, but I have to add my two bits since I quite liked it.
Lost in Translation is a slow movie in a frenetic city (Tokyo),
and rests on a fairly simple plot. This
is a structure that works for me and, in a nice twist, the pacing
and the simplicity of plot reminded me of some of my favorite Asian
films.
I also enjoyed peeking into the
world of Japan, particularly through the eyes of our two befuddled
main characters, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and Bob (Bill Murray).
Although I didn't find any answers
to questions of loneliness, connecting to others, and love, both
Charlotte and Bob bump into these questions from different angles.
There is a gentleness and humor
to this movie that cracked me up, but also left room for contemplation.
I am looking forward to occasionally
returning to this movie, as a travelogue of Japan and relationships.
